Darren T. Kimura, General Partner
Darren is a technology and finance executive with over 20 years of experience in 24 countries including such major geographies as the USA, Japan and India. His areas of expertise includes information technology (IT), media, energy efficiency, and solar. Over his career he built numerous companies including an internet service provider which was sold to a publicly traded national ISP, an educational technology company which was sold to a media conglomerate, a solar project development firm which was sold to a publicly traded solar developer, a solar technology company which was sold to a publicly traded global technology company, a software business which was sold to a private equity fund and an energy efficiency company which was sold to a private energy holdings company. He has been an inventor on 14 patents and acquired 65 patents and licenses globally. Through his businesses he has overseen the acquisition of over $2 billion in contracts, raised over $110 million in venture capital/private equity and over $100 million in project financing. He has served in corporate executive positions leading key strategic initiatives such as preparing for an Initial Public Offering, overseeing Mergers & Acquisitions, serving as a Strategist with a Fortune 1,000 company, and has been responsible for establishing and managing strategic relationships with Global 2,000 companies. Darren has overseen manufacturing in the USA, India, UAE, Taiwan, China, and the Philippines and software development in the USA, India and the Philippines. He was recognized as the SBA Young Entrepreneur of the Year in 2002, Ally of the Year by Hawaiian Electric, an Energy Pioneer by the EPA Energy Star Program and was awarded the Honua “Earth” Prize by the Blue Planet Foundation. Darren has a BA from the University of Hawaii and attended Portland State University studying Electrical Engineering and Stanford University studying Computer Science. Darren is also a Certified Energy Manager®, a licensed electrical contractor and Eagle Scout and is based in Palo Alto, CA.
Ken Shimada, Operating Partner
Ken is an operating partner at Enerdigm with deep expertise in Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A). Prior to Enerdigm, Ken was the Chief Operating Officer at a $150 Million energy solutions company overseeing Administration, Finance and Operations. Before that he served as the Vice President of Finance at a global Solar technology manufacturer and assisted in over $90 million of capital formation. He also previously served at a publicly traded fuel cell and polysilicon manufacturing company where he assisted in the formation of $700 million for the construction of the company’s polysilicon plant in Idaho, oversaw the plant’s construction and participated on the Initial Public Offering to the NASDAQ exchange. Mr. Shimada began his career as an analyst at a Private Equity firm. Mr. Shimada has a BBA from the University of Hawaii
Duane Ashimine, Operating Partner
Duane began his career in the energy industry in 1989 as an energy engineer at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii working on nuclear submarines. He later transitioned to the nation’s 15th largest mechanical contractor owned by Japan’s Taisei and then joined Hawaiian Electric’s Power Corp. as an energy engineer designing building efficient systems domestically and power plants internationally. Mr. Ashimine joined one of the largest energy solutions company as its Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer in 1998 and served as its President since 2013 until its sale to a holding company. Working with Darren, Duane has designed and commercialized unique energy systems as a building Energy Management Software, a combined Photovoltaic and Thermal Energy Ice Storage systems, Combined Heat and Power Cogeneration systems, Ozone Water Treatment systems, Voltage Regulation technologies, Digital Programmable Thermostats, and Flat Plate Solar Collector with Absorption Chillers. Mr. Ashimine has been recognized as the State of Hawaii’s Technology Leader of the Year 2007 and received his BS from the University of Hawaii in Mechanical Engineering. He is also a Certified Energy Manager, Certified Demand Side Manager, Certified Cogeneration Specialist, Licensed Hawaii C52 Mechanical Contractor, Certified Project Manager.
Evan Leong, Venture Partner
Evan is a Hawaii born and raised entrepreneur with businesses ranging from specialty foods and beverages to media and action sports. His expertise is in lifestyle businesses and social entrepreneurship. Evan is the co-founder and CEO of three distinguished companies in Hawaii: Greater Good Inc, Kokua.org and Bubble Tea Supply. In July 2005, Evan co-founded the highly acclaimed, community-orientated radio show Greater Good Radio that later expanded to a TV show on CBS and published book named “The Greater Good: Life Lessons From Hawaii’s Leaders”. The greatergoodradio.com site has received millions of visitors from over 100 countries. In 2001 Evan co-founded Bubble Tea Supply which launched the national bubble tea drink craze. Run by Evan and Kari Leong, the company distributes product throughout North America, Hawaii, Guam and Saipan. This makes the Leongs one of the nation’s largest suppliers of the bubble tea product. Evan attended Punahou School and graduated Cum Laude from Hawaii Pacific University where he was the first recipient of the Distinguished Certificate of Business Excellence and was the Paul CT Loo Distinguished Alumni in 2007. Evan is also a member of the Delta Mu Delta Honor Society. He obtained his Executive Masters of Business Administration from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 2005. In 2006, Evan was recognized by Pacific Business News in their “Forty under 40” business award. He was also selected as one of Hawaii’s 2006 Top High Tech Leaders on behalf of the Pacific Technology Foundation and the Technology News Network. Evan is based in Honolulu, HI.
Richard P. Spencer – Venture Partner
Mr. Spencer worked in the area of international for Bank of America’s World Banking Division as a Vice President stationed in Mexico City and Los Angeles. He was also an executive in Citibank, Utah. He held the position of President/Chief Executive Officer of Elamex S.A. de C.V., a diversified Mexican manufacturing company engaged in cross border manufacturing in the United States and Mexico and listed on NASDAQ; and President/Chief Executive Officer of Silver Eagle Refining, Inc. where he was instrumental in the purchase and restart of two small specialty oil refineries. Prior to leaving Silver Eagle Refining, Inc., Mr. Spencer was instrumental in negotiating the merger of Silver Eagle Refining, Inc. with The International Group, Inc., resulting in a fully integrated international specialty wax company.
Mr. Spencer has served on the Board of Directors of Elamex, S.A. de C.V., Silver Eagle Refining, Inc., First National Bank of San Diego, and Maverik, Inc. a Western US regional convenience store chain.
A graduate of the Harvard Business School, Mr. Spencer has also served as a volunteer representative for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Uruguay and Guatemala. Mr. Spencer is based in Provo, UT.
Tal Moshe Ziv – Venture Partner
Tal Moshe Ziv is also the founder and CEO of Silver Living, the trusted voice for seniors online and the only independent research source on senior care. In addition to revolutionizing the senior industry, Tal is a recognized cleantech expert. He led acquisitions for GE Energy, ran operations at a solar technology company, and advises several cleantech ventures. Tal is based in New York, NY.
Amy Smith – Member of the Investment Advisory Committee
Ms. Smith is a recognized industry expert in the CleanTech and high growth spaces and has participated as a keynote speaker in numerous leading conferences. Prior to her current role, Ms. Smith acted as a Managing Director and Global Head of Jefferies’ CleanTech investment banking team. Prior to this role, Ms. Smith helped write the business plan and run the alternative energy investment banking practice at Lehman Brothers and Barclays Capital.
Ms. Smith is one of the longest tenured CleanTech bankers on Wall Street, having advised clients globally on engagements totaling $10s of billions. Ms. Smith has very closer relationships with the venture capital community, specifically with firms focused on high growth sectors such as CleanTech, Technology and Energy. Ms Smith’s experience leveraged finance, high yield bond origination, leveraged loan origination, leveraged buyouts, private placements, IPOs, follow-ons, convertible bonds, high yield bonds, leveraged loans, M&A, commodities, project finance and other areas. Ms. Smith has particular international expertise, having advised numerous clients globally, especially in China.
Ms. Smith graduated Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa with a Bachelor of Arts degree in business economics from the University of California, Santa Barbara.from development to technology. He is also a recognized leader in at a US Air Force Officer. Amy is based in Denver, Colorado.
